The Goods Line
This project involved the construction of a pedestrian link between Darling Harbour and Central.
The Goods Line project involved the transformation of the former disused Darling Harbour railway line into a world class 800m linear pedestrian and cyclist corridor, linking the Ultimo cultural and educational institutions (UTS, Sydney Institute TAFE, ABC and the Powerhouse Museum) to the CBD and Darling Harbour precinct.
Connections were also established between the Sydney International Convention Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct (SICEEP) through to the Railway Square bus and train interchange.
Further details include:
- Green infrastructure and water sensitive urban design initiatives, including rainwater storage systems, drought tolerant species and drip irrigation systems
- Public facilities including seating areas, bicycle racks, drinking fountains and litter bins
- Recreation spaces including raised turf areas, study pods and activity platforms incorporating table tennis, children’s play areas and outdoor exercise equipment
- Flexible event spaces including catwalk and work desks inclusive of toilets and seating areas
Other works included in situ and precast concrete, excavation, ground stabilisation, structural steel, electrical communications, drainage, balustrades, landscaping, signage and outdoor furniture.
Gartner Rose removed over 1,900t of contaminated material without impacting on the operation of the neighbouring University of Technology or local businesses. Material removed had a range of different classifications with localised areas of high contamination levels, resulting in significant testing of stockpiles to ensure the safest and most economical method of removal.
Furthermore, by using a process of cement stabilisation of the base course, Gartner Rose was able to eliminate the need to remove a further 600t of spoil from the site, resulting in significant benefits from a cost basis, as well as eliminating massive amounts of truck movements through the CBD.
